Doxo, an online service for paying bills, has released its 2023 State by State Bill Pay Market Report, which reveals how much the average household spends on essential monthly bills in each state. Those essential household bills cover 10 categories:

  • Mortgage
  • Rent
  • Auto Loan
  • Utilities (electric, gas, water and sewer, and waste and recycling)
  • Auto Insurance
  • Cable, Internet, and Phone
  • Health Insurance
  • Mobile Phone
  • Alarm and Security
  • Life Insurance.

The report found that across the country, Americans spent $3.22 trillion on those bills annually. That represents 21% of all U.S. household spending. The average annual cost per U.S. household is $24,557 while the average monthly cost per household is $2,046.

However, there are several states where households pay significantly more for their monthly bills than the rest of the United States. Those states are:

  1. Hawaii: $3,070 monthly bill average (+50% more than the national average)
  2. California: $2,838 (+38.7%)
  3. New Jersey: $2,727 (+33.2%)
  4. Massachusetts: $2,656 (+29.8%)
  5. Maryland: $2,569 (+25.5%)
  6. Connecticut: $2,504 (+22.4%)
  7. New York: $2,495 (+21.9%)
  8. Washington: $2,468 (+20.6%)
  9. Colorado: $2,413 (+17.9%)
  10. Alaska: $2,335 (+14.1%)
