The Dallas Police Department lets social workers take the lead on some 9-1-1 calls

Since 2018, the Dallas PD has been screening incoming 9-1-1 calls in certain neighborhoods. If a call seemed likely to involve a person’s mental health, a social worker took the lead on the response instead of a cop. It’s gone so well that they are expanding the program to the entire city.
