Profits with Purpose: Domini Social Investments

Amy Domini, CEO
New York, New York

Using investments to help care for the planet, that's our mission. Although today's financial system maximizes wealth rather than well-being, we seek investments that will contribute to a fairer, more sustainable world, one where individuals and the ecosystem are treated with respect.

In the new global economy, the shareholders of the world's corporations play an increasingly significant role in shaping our collective future -- for better or for worse. As investors, we have the opportunity and the responsibility to help ensure that our impact on the planet is positive.

The world we live in today was shaped by the investment decisions made by the previous generations. Today's socially responsible investors recognize this simple truth and use their investment dollars wisely, to create a better future for all.

At Domini, using focused, in-house research, we evaluate potential investments using our global investment standards, seeking to identify better investments that will contribute to a fairer, more sustainable world. Our submanager, Wellington Management Company, then applies rigorous financial analysis to our selected investments while seeking to manage risk through their portfolio construction methodology.

Two fundamental principles underlie Domini's global investment standards: the promotion of a society that values human dignity and the protection of our natural environment. These standards are based on a corporation's relationship with its stakeholders, such as its local, national, and global communities, customers, ecosystems, employees, investors, and suppliers. We view these stakeholders as partners with corporations, and believe corporations have important opportunities to invest in their partners and, in turn, to be rewarded by them. We also recognize that corporations can create substantial risks -- financial, social, and environmental -- when they fail to manage their partnerships appropriately. By applying our global investment standards, we believe we can help identify strong long-term investments, as well as highlight companies that enrich their relationships with these partners.

We work hard to find ways to make the world better. We choose to invest in better companies, and we talk to the companies we own, discussing everything from global climate change to sweatshop issues to making products in a safer way. Gradually, companies are coming to understand what we already know -- that they can improve their behavior and still make a profit.

We also recognize that a strong, vibrant marketplace requires strong, vibrant communities. Community investing is a strategy for redirecting capital to where it is needed most -- and empowering people to help themselves. It is a strategy that recognizes that a health economy must be built from the bottom up. We have therefore developed investment vehicles that work to rebuild our nation's underserved communities.

At Domini Social Investments, we work to ensure that when you reach your financial goals you can enjoy a better world -- a world that you helped to build.
