The University of Minnesota Health, Clinics, and Surgery Center offers five stories—342,000-square-feet—of ultra-efficient, high-tech solutions for the often stressful, tedious experience of receiving medical care. Traditional floorplans and strategies were rethought with modern solutions. Like the Apple Store, the new Clinics & Surgery Center features no central check-in or reception; instead, guests are welcomed by roaming employees, who check them in on their smartphones. Instead of wasting space with often-vacant private offices, a series of rooms are open for reservation. Both staff and guests are given Wi-Fi-enabled badges that track their location and can page them no matter where they are in the facility, ensuring that no one goes on waiting (and waiting and waiting) for too long.
