Yann LeCun, one of the most accomplished scientists in the field of machine learning, is the director of Facebook’s Artificial Intelligence Research program, where he focuses on the fundamental science of artificial intelligence and conducts long-term research. He is also a part-time professor of computer science at New York University and a founding director of its Center for Data Science. LeCun is credited as one of the fathers of convolutional neural nets, a branch of deep learning that set the foundation for much of today’s automated technology. LeCun previously spent 14 years working at Bell Labs; in his current role at Facebook, which he’s held since late 2013, LeCun studies long-term problems in artificial intelligence and machine learning and works closely with the company’s Applied Machine Learning program, which deploys AI into the social network’s products. He is an advocate for openness and transparency, and his team frequently publishes its work and distributes its code on repositories like GitHub.
