At Shopify, Tobi Lütke is a programmer as well as the CEO and founder. The Shopify platform makes easier for e-commerce sites to use and manage software, essentially allowing anyone to hang up a retail shingle on the internet. When Lütke noticed the changing patterns in how people did their online shopping, he positioned Shopify to reflect that behavior. Instead of solely focusing on helping merchants set up their internet storefronts, the company bought a mobile development agency to offer services that will allow customers to shop directly from social media pages. And as Shopify has grown from 30 to 1,000 staffers, Lütke believes its important to maintain a “small company” feel. "What we're trying to do is we want to prove in a way that there is a false dichotomy—that being a startup is a state of mind rather than a measure of size, and there's a lot of mistakes in the process,” he told Fast Company.
