Theaster Gates is a Chicago-based potter turned conceptual artist and social activist focused on art-based community redevelopment. He is the founder of the nonprofit Rebuild Foundation, which is devoted to creating cultural hubs in poor neighborhoods. He is the Director of Arts and Public Life at the University of Chicago.
