For designing a “forest school” for orphaned orangutans

Signe Preuschoft is a primatologist at Four Paws, an international animal welfare nonprofit. After studying psychology and then earning a doctorate in biology, Preuschoft began working on a rehabilitation project for former lab apes in Austria. Six years later, convinced that she wanted to use her knowledge to address the extinction crisis, she joined Four Paws to work on projects including nursing orphaned orangutans back to health. Now based in Indonesia, Preuschoft leads the nonprofit's new "forest school" for baby orangutans, run in collaboration with the Indonesian nonprofit Jejak Pulang. The school, which opened in 2018, trains human caregivers to help the infant apes learn skills that they would have learned from their mothers if their mothers had not been killed. Through a combination of deep expertise and creativity, Preuschoft designs the school to try to replicate the animals' experience in the wild, from where the apes sleep to how they learn to climb trees.
