For being a knockout filmmaker
Ryan Coogler is a film director who became widely known after directing Fruitvale Station, which won an Audience Award and a Grand Jury Prize at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival. He followed up his indie debut by reuniting with Fruitvale star Michael B. Jordan for 2015's Creed--an unexpected critical and commercial hit for the seventh film in the Rocky franchise. After Creed’s success, Coogler was courted by Marvel Studios to direct its Black Panther feature, with Chadwick Boseman starring as the regal hero from the fictional African nation of Wakanda. In addition to filmmaking, Coogler also works with the social justice organization Blackout for Human Rights, along with the likes of Jordan, Ava DuVernay, Donald Glover, and Joseph Gordon-Levitt.
