Ross Bailey was an aspiring T-shirt designer when he launched Appear Here, in 2013, as an Airbnb-like online marketplace for businesses to find pop-up brick-and-mortar retail space. Starting in London, he lured landlords to list underused properties with him by creating and marketing mini shopping districts, filling empty shopfronts with up-and-coming independent businesses, as well as retail and other installations for major brands including Chanel, Nike, Topshop, Kanye West, and Netflix.
Appear Here launched in Paris in spring 2016 and New York, in April 2017, where Bailey has secured exclusive deals with the city’s top landlords and real estate firms. Since launch, Appear Here has helped brands launch over 5,000 ideas globally, working with 2,000 landlords in 4,500 spaces across the three cities. Bailey, who dropped out of school at age 16, has raised more than $20 million from investors to fund expansion into other major urban markets.
