Nikki Sylianteng is an interactive designer known for her guerilla design project To Park or Not To Park, which aims to rethink the parking sign. Sylianteng started the project while living in Los Angeles after she received one too many parking citations due to the city's confusing parking signs. She created a time chart-based design with red and green blocks indicating when you can and can't park. She laminated it with packing tape and posted it under a parking sign outside her apartment window. In 2014, To Park or Not To Park gained notoriety from the Awesome Foundation and the Shuttleworth Foundation and received grants from them. Also that year, L.A. councilman Paul Krekorian approached her about using her designs. Since then, the project has been a 2015 finalist for Fast Company's Innovation By Design Awards, and its streamlined parking signs are being tested in L.A., New Haven, and Brisbane, Australia. Plus, municipalities from Vancouver to Fargo, North Dakota, are exploring the designs for their own parking systems, too.
