M Sanjayan is a Sri Lankan-born American conservation scientist, writer, and television news contributor. He is currently the chief executive officer of Conservation International, a nonprofit environmental organization that is helping to build a healthier, more prosperous, and more productive planet for all.
Previously, Sanjayan served as Conservation International's executive vice president and senior scientist, leading key divisions and the nonprofit’s critically acclaimed brand campaign, “Nature Is Speaking,” as well as overseeing the CI’s use of virtual reality filmmaking. Sanjayan holds a doctorate from the University of California, Santa Cruz, and has published scientific work in peer-reviewed journals including Science, Nature, and Conservation Biology. In addition to hosting the University of California and Vox Media’s Climate Lab series in 2017, Sanjayan has co-hosted documentaries for PBS, BBC, Discovery, and Showtime.
This year Sanjayan is focused on doubling the amount of protected areas in our oceans.
