Laverne Cox is an actress, producer, and LGBTQ advocate best known for her role as Sophia Burset, a transgender inmate, on Netflix’s Orange Is The New Black. Since the show first premiered in 2013, Cox has helped push transgender issues to the forefront: In 2014 she became the first openly transgender person to be nominated for a Primetime Emmy and the first to appear on the cover of Time magazine. In 2016, Cox starred in a television remake of The Rocky Horror Picture Show on Fox, and in 2017 she is appearing in the legal TV drama Doubt on CBS. In addition to her acting work, Cox is an advocate for LGBTQ rights and other political issues; she is a vocal opponent of North Carolina’s controversial HB2 law, the so-called Bathroom Bill, and has spoken out against other laws that discriminate against LGBTQ minorities across the country. In 2016, she was the executive producer of a documentary, Free CeCe, about a transgender woman who spent time in solitary confinement in a men’s prison.
