Dr. Klaus Lackner is the director of the Center for Negative Carbon Emissions and a professor at the School of Sustainable Engineering and the Built Environment of the Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering at Arizona State University. Before he started the center, he was a professor at Columbia University, where he was also the director of the Lenfest Center for Sustainable Energy, and before that he worked in the theoretical division at the Los Alamos National Laboratory. Lackner started the center to demonstrate that air capture is affordable and to drive the collaborative effort to further the technology, a strategy of which he was the pioneer. In 2009, he started developing a synthetic tree that could collect carbon 1,000 times faster than real trees.
