Kimbal Musk is cofounder of The Kitchen, a restaurant group that emphasizes sustainable and community-based food practices, and of The Kitchen Community, a nonprofit that teaches children about food by putting learning gardens in local schools. Musk and his brother, Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk, founded their first startup together in 1995; the company, Zip2, sold to Compaq for some $300 million when Kimbal was just 26 years old. He then invested in a number of tech companies, including PayPal, before enrolling in the French Culinary Institute in New York. In 2004, he opened his first Kitchen restaurant in Boulder, Colorado, along with Hugo Matheson and Jen Lewin. The Kitchen restaurant group now encompasses more than 10 restaurants in Boulder, Denver, Fort Collins, Chicago, and Memphis. In 2011, Musk and Matheson launched their nonprofit, The Kitchen Community, to further their mission of improving food culture. Musk also sits on the board of Tesla, SpaceX, and Chipotle.
