Julie Wainwright has spent her career running disruptive tech startups, like online video site Reel.com and e-commerce site Pets.com, which collapsed in 2000 during the dotcom bust.
In 2011, she launched The RealReal, an effort to bring the consignment of luxury products into the digital world. Wainwright has focused on offering both buyers and sellers a premium experience, which she feels was lacking in the consignment industry and other resale sites like eBay. Buyers receive prepaid boxes and labels to send off their products, which are then appraised by experts, before being featured online for sellers to purchase. The site has grown considerably and says it is on track to sell $1 billion of goods in 2018. It is now focusing on expanding its brick-and-mortar presence, which aims to provide the same easy and luxurious buying and selling experience to luxury consumers who want to visit stores.
