CEO, Ctrip

For piloting a travel site that goes the distance
The Most Creative People in business 2017

Jane Sun had been CEO of Ctrip—China’s largest (and the world’s second largest) online travel company—for less than a month when she orchestrated the surprise acquisition, in November 2016, of Scotland’s popular flight-search tool Skyscanner for $1.7 billion. The bold move, which will further help Ctrip’s 250 million users find and book international flights, is part of Sun’s larger effort to create an all-encompassing travel platform that follows people through every step of their journey, whether it involves booking planes and chauffeured cars or even medical treatments. “We are not a traditional online travel agency,” says Sun, who served previously as both chief operating officer and chief financial officer. Even as Ctrip makes bigger investments, such as its purchase of a handful of Chinese-language U.S. tour operators in 2016, Sun encourages staff to introduce smaller, stickier services and features on the platform. The app now offers everything from airport parking and luggage-concierge services to a currency-exchange program—all ideas that were incubated in-house. “We want to empower the young people within our company,” says Sun, “and make sure that [our platform] offers whatever the customer needs.”
