Gene Hogg is the area commander of the Salvation Army of Central Maryland, part of the national evangelical community services nonprofit based in Alexandria, Virginia. Hogg pioneered a new assistance model through DMG Foods,a grocery story that encourages healthier eating and spending habits in northeast Baltimore, a former food desert.(The store’s name is short for “Doing the Most Good”—a Salvation Army slogan.) Hogg has been involved the organization since becoming a beneficiary at age eight, whilehis family was battling homelessness. Hogg began leadership training at age 19, and graduated with a degree in leadership and ethics from Nazarene College. He commanded the group’s response efforts to 9/11 at the Pentagon and Hurricane Katrina. The grocery store operates on a high-volume, low profit model that discounts healthy foods. Once it proves sustainable, he hopes others will adoptit.
