Gene Hogg is the area commander of the Salvation Army of Central Maryland, part of the national evangelical community services nonprofit based in Alexandria, Virginia. Hogg has been involved the organization since becoming a beneficiary at age eight, whilehis family was battling homelessness. Hogg began leadership training at age 19, and graduated with a degree in leadership and ethics from Nazarene College. He commanded the group’s response efforts to 9/11 at the Pentagon and Hurricane Katrina. The grocery store operates on a high-volume, low profit model that discounts healthy foods. Once it proves sustainable, he hopes others will adoptit.
