Dev Hynes, who performs as Blood Orange, pushes with his words, music, and indeterminate identity against rigid definitions of race, sexuality, and culture. His unstructured aesthetic is his one consistency, whether he’s producing tracks for Solange Knowles, FKA Twigs, ASAP Rocky, or himself. "There’s a lot of study and research," says Hynes of his process, "but within that, it’s loose." His most recent solo album, 2018's acclaimed Negro Swan, which has been streamed 40 million times, could be the soundtrack for today’s anxious, fractured, gender-fluid times—insider music for every outsider. Raised in Britain, he began performing as a member of the band Test Icicles, before recording two solo albums as Lightspeed Champion. After relocating to New York City in 2007, he switched to his current alias, Blood Orange, in 2008, recording four albums to date. Bullied as a kid in East London, it was music that opened the world up to Hynes. "I think entertainment helps to dissolve tribalism and boundaries," he says. "It’s why I always think I’m going to be myself because there’s no other way to be." And he hopes his work inspires that independence and freedom in his listeners. [Photo: Nick Harwood]
