For being Silicon Valley's China whisperer
At the respected VC firm Andreessen Horowitz, Connie Chan has become a key bridge to China for the startup community. Chan, who grew up in the Bay Area but immersed herself in China’s digital culture while on assignment in Beijing for Hewlett-Packard in 2010, helps portfolio companies with an eye on expanding in Asia navigate the unique characteristics of Chinese consumers’ internet behavior. In the past year, for example, she spent time advising Airbnb, which is gearing up to launch its Chinese brand. “I might give basic thoughts on product design they’re rolling out, like, ‘Use different icons or more color.’ Or, ‘Use more clickable options rather than a drop-down menu, since that’s more common in China.’ ” Chan says her biggest value to Western entrepreneurs is helping them see “this whole other half of the world. You get moments where they go, ‘Wow, that’s a great idea. Why don’t we have that here yet?’ ”
