Brown Johnson, the force behind Nickelodeon’s hit children’s shows Blue’s Clues and Dora the Explorer, is now responsible for Sesame Workshop’s domestic television content and creative services. In a 2015 interview with Fast Company, Johnson explained how she got her start in the industry: “I worked with someone in Orlando at Universal Studios, and we were trying to do a game show for kids. The four-year-olds were completely not interested. I thought about my own child. and she was always interested in helping. Kids like to help; they like to feel powerful, they like to feel smart. We figured out that in order to motivate kids to read, you just had to make them feel really helpful. So there was this boy named Steve, and he had a dog named Blue. Steve could never find anything. So we invented a game called ‘Blue’s Clues,’ which was all about kids getting the answer first and then helping Steve solve the problem. That was sort of the pivotal start of my career in kids’ TV.”
