Through World Wide Hearing, a six-year-old Montreal-based nonprofit that serves people with hearing loss in developing countries and underserved communities, Audra Renyi has given hearing aids to 3,000 children globally. The work has largely been dependent on unreliable donations and charity discounts, so in 2016, with the support of the Canadian government, Renyi started a for-profit company to help WWH’s mission: earAccess purchases hearing aids in bulk with long-term contracts, which allows Renyi, a former Wall Street analyst, to sell them at big discounts. “There are so many more people with hearing loss than vision loss, but because it’s invisible, it’s not on the radar,” she says. To raise awareness, Renyi also established the Global Hearing Loss Database, a digital platform that aggregates scientific studies and data from field workers to provide doctors, researchers, and governments a better understanding of the prevalence of hearing loss, which affects 1.3 billion people worldwide.
