Abby Wambach played as a forward for the U.S. women’s national soccer team for 14 years. She retired in 2015 after winning that year’s Women’s World Cup, along with two Olympic gold medals. Wambach, an openly gay woman, has been vocal about LGBTQ rights and spoke out about the gender pay gap in U.S. soccer after some of her former teammates filed a lawsuit against the sport’s governing body in March 2016. Following Wambach’s retirement from professional soccer, she signed onto ESPN as an on-air analyst and launched a podcast on ESPN, Fearless Conversation with Abby Wambach, in which she’s interviewed athletes including Kobe Bryant and Harrison Browne, a transgender hockey player. Wambach also published her memoir, Forward, in September 2016.
