After an early career in banking and investing, Aaron Fairchild founded Seattle- and Portland-based Green Canopy, Inc. in 2012 to develop sustainable residential properties on urban infill properties. Green Canopy, a B Corporation, is the only U.S. builder dedicated to developing only certified “deep green” single- and multi-unit homes, built in vacant or underused urban parcels and incorporating sustainable materials and energy-efficient lighting and appliances.
Fairchild won a 2017 Builders and Innovators Award from Goldman Sachs in recognition of his company's socially driven business model. The company has completed and sold over 135 homes to date, and currently has 160 more in development in Washington and Oregon, including 70 net-zero energy homes.
About 10% of its current housing portfolio has been reserved for affordable rentals through a Washington State program. With $80 million in revenue to date, the company is funding its next round of building through a for-profit fund that will set aside 25% of its new multi-family net-zero units for renters making less than the median area income. After seven to 10 years, it will turn over 25% of its remaining portfolio to a community trust for permanently affordable housing.
