Personal mobility gets a stylish makeover with Whill’s line of personal electronic vehicles, which trace their roots to a conversation in 2010 between CEO Satoshi Sugie and a wheelchair user who said he had stopped going out in public because his chair made him self-conscious and ashamed. Sugie and team set out to create a new kind of personal EV, one that would let people navigate various different kinds of environments, get around with confidence, and look good doing it. They exhibited their work at the Tokyo Motor Show the following year, and Whill was born. The company went on to win Engadget’s “Best Accessibility Tech” award in 2017, for its compact, ultra-durable all-terrain vehicle, the Whill Model M.
