uBiome

Spurred by the National Institutes of Health's Human Microbiome Project, uBiome is all about figuring out what microbes you have hanging out in your gut, on your skin, and, well, everywhere else. The company launched with a 2013 crowdfunding campaign. It raised more than $350,000 and became what uBiome calls the "largest successful single citizen science project in history." Interested citizens of the world can pay for kits to test one or more sites on their bodies (gut, nose, mouth, skin, and genital tests are available); the company extracts the bacterial DNA, sequences it, and emails participants a link to their results. uBiome recently launched a new app that uses Apple's ResearchKit framework to study the link between microbiomes and body weight, too.
