The Players' Tribune

In its second year, Derek Jeter’s startup The Players’ Tribune hit its stride as an alternative to traditional sports media. The savvy and creative storytelling platform lets athletes speak for themselves. The site not only broke news with first-person exclusives (Kobe Bryant’s retirement and Kevin Durant’s decision to join Golden State), but also expanded its subject matter with hauntingly personal essays (a former NHL player on surviving child abuse) and a variety of topical columns on everything from Black Lives Matter to the Flint, Michigan water crisis to the 2016 U.S. election.

The Players’ Tribune also branched out into video, VR, and live streaming, and began developing a podcast network and its first film in 2017. All of these efforts combined have doubled the site’s audience. It now garners more than 100 million monthly content views, and more than doubled its fundraising with another $40 million in December 2016.
