In 2017, more than half of all Americans made an online purchase powered by payments startup Stripe. The company, cofounded by brothers John and Patrick Collison, has become the leading payment gateway for fellow startups. With just a few lines of Stripe’s code, online retailers and apps can get their checkouts up and running, while in the background managing fraud. To encourage the formation of even more startup customers, Stripe has developed a product called Atlas, which makes incorporating in the U.S. simple, fast, and cheap. At the same time, Stripe has started serving larger merchants, including Amazon, and providing them with data tools. The company is also increasingly active overseas, with operations in most of Europe and a growing portion of Asia, including Hong Kong, Japan, and Singapore.
