Skidmore, Owings & Merrill is one of the largest architecture, interior design, engineering, and urban planning firms in the world, having completed more than 10,000 projects in over 50 countries. Its work includes the 1 World Trade Center tower in New York and the Burj Khalifa in Dubai. Still, more than 80 years after its founding in Chicago, the firm remains on the cutting edge of architectural design by expanding the range of materials available to architects and partnering with academic and government researchers to refine new fabrication techniques. In 2016, the firm experimented with use of mass timber, an engineered wood product that some believe is more sustainable than steel—a method that has the potential to create an entirely new classification of building.
