Television über-producer Shonda Rhimes’s company has evolved from the powerhouse television production company behind ABC’s Thursday night prime-time block (TGIT) into a creator of multi-media content that espouses the self-empowering, feminist messages of its signature shows: Grey’s Anatomy, Scandal, and How To Get Away With Murder. In 2017, the company launched Shondaland.com, which publishes essays, articles, videos, and podcasts that seek to create a community and encourage action amongst Rhimes’s followers in the vein of Oprah Winfrey. The site also gives Rhimes a platform to promote her own ventures, such as her partnership with Dove as the creative director for the Real Beauty film series. Shondaland’s next new frontier is Netflix, where Rhimes is headed after spending her career at ABC. Shondaland’s $100 million deal with the streaming giant will give her even more freedom to push boundaries and create shows that represent her inclusive worldview.
