Raad Studio was founded in 2004 by former NASA engineer James Ramsey. The firm has completed more than 100 design projects based on a philosophy of allowing construction methods and materials to inform its buildings, many of which are residential. But Raad Studio’s most exciting and innovative project is still in the works: The firm is transforming an underground subway station into a park on Manhattan’s Lower East Side, a neighborhood with little green space, using solar technology and cleverly designed skylights to help plants grow underground. Though the project has captured public imagination and been in progress for years, in 2016 Raad Studio surmounted the biggest logistical hurdle—city approval—bringing the Lowline park one significant step closer to reality.
