The world’s population needs fertilizer to survive, yet the product itself is helping to destroy the world. Nearly a third of all U.S. farmers apply a synthetic nitrogen “side dressing” as a way to increase crop yield. In doing so, they release a gas that is 300 times more potent than carbon dioxide, contributing to the global climate crisis. Synthetic nitrogen is estimated to be responsible for about 5% of the world’s global warming. Pivot Bio makes the world's first nitrogen-producing microbial that grafts onto corn to act as a sustainable fertilizer. Unlike synthetic chemical fertilizer, the nitrogen-producing microbes feed nitrogen to the corn plants directly to their roots and throughout the growing season to help reduce variability in the field. The company has partnered with farmers in critical, corn-producing states to test the product and plans to begin selling it in 2019. Research and development conducted over five growing seasons shows that Pivot Bio’s fertilizer can replace the equivalent of 25 pounds of nitrogen per acre.
