Oscar Health

Founded in 2012, Oscar set out to upend the stodgy business of health insurance by focusing on consumer experience, making it easy to shop for plans, find doctors, and access telehealth services 24/7. In 2018, Oscar thoroughly revamped its back-end claims system to enable a number of seemingly simple things that were previously impossible and that few other systems can handle: paying doctors on the spot through real-time claims decisions, providing real-time prior-authorizations for patients, creating flexible pricing for doctor’s visits, and providing more transparent cost estimates for patients. The company, which now operates in six states, took on a $375 million investment from Google parent company Alphabet in August 2018, to help expand into new markets and new business lines, including Medicare Advantage in 2020.
