The Office for Metropolitan Architecture is an international partnership for architecture, urbanism, and cultural analysis that focuses on intelligent design and reinventing how structures are used. Since its founding in 1975 by critically acclaimed architect Rem Koolhaas, the Office for Metropolitan Architecture (OMA) has distinguished itself as as a powerhouse of not only architecture but fine design. OMA's research and design studio AMO works not only in architecture but also in media, renewable energy, technology, publishing, and more. The firm is led by nine partners, including Koolhaas, and has offices in the Netherlands, the U.S., China, the UAE, and Qatar. In 2015, the firm completed a number of eye-catching projects, including the museum and gallery Fondazione Prada, the Garage Museum of Contemporary Art in Moscow's Gorky Park, and Timmerhuis, a glass building featuring a stacked design that will house the local government of Rotterdam. Also in 2015, OMA won the World Architectural Festival award for World Building of the Year for its Interlace residential building in Singapore. Similar in appearance to shipping containers stacked on top of one another and surrounded by greenery, the building has become a modern icon in the Asian city and proves that high design belongs to everyone. Up next? The Dutch firm will build arts venue The Factory, its first major building in the United Kingdom.
