Founded in 1923, The Nielsen Company is the world’s most trusted measurer of content and product consumption. While Nielsen started as a mere sales-management tool, today it provides analytics services for consumer packaged goods, advertising campaigns, TV viewership, and digital media. In recent years, the company has shifted its focus, alongside consumers, toward developing measurement tools for streaming services. Nielsen Gracenote—which creates and collects detailed information about music, movies, and TV—counts brands like Apple Music, Spotify, Roku, and Google among its users, and in 2018, it released Gracenote Sonic Style, which leverages machine learning to enable the categorization of millions of songs by 450 distinct “style profiles.”
