Nextdrop

The World's Most Innovative Companies 2016In India, it's not uncommon for women to stay at home for hours, waiting for water to come out of the faucet so they can drink, cook, and clean. While solving the problem of the country's low water supply and antiquated distribution system might be nearly impossible, Anu Sridharan and Devin Miller have found a way to at least make the situation more bearable. In 2011, they founded Nextdrop, a Bangalore-based company that relies on a vast network of valvemen, engineers, and citizens to maintain up-to-date information on where the water supply is (and isn't), and then passes that information onto residents via text messages. Nextdrop is now operating across four cities and has accumulated 70,000 household users--and estimates that it has saved those users more than 13 million hours of waiting time.
