Moog Music

The World's Most Innovative Companies 2017

Moog Music may be best known for the classic analog synthesizers that bear the name of founder Bob Moog, but the small, North Carolina-based company isn’t stuck in the past. After a year-long hiatus, its Moogfest music and technology festival returned in 2016, bringing more than 40,000 attendees to Durham for daytime panels exploring the bleeding edge of creativity and tech and for nighttime music line-ups featuring artists including Grimes, GZA, Gary Numan, and Blood Orange. The company, which is half-owned by its employees through a stock ownership plan initiated by CEO Michael Adams in 2015, continues to churn out synthesizers and other music hardware. But it’s not just synths like the remake of its classic Model D Minimoog that started rolling out of its Asheville, N.C. factory last year; Moog Music’s engineers also build sophisticated music-making synth apps like the Animoog and 2016’s Model 15 app for iOS, which recreates a $10,000 modular synthesizer and crams it onto phones and tablets for $30.
