Modern Fertility

Cofounded in 2017 by Afton Vechery and Carly Leahy, Modern Fertility began selling its groundbreaking direct-to-consumer fertility test in May 2018. The test, which costs $159, measures a panel of hormones from a fingerstick blood sample, providing women with a sort of fertility status report, previously available only through testing at specialty clinics that could cost as much as $1,500. The company’s founders hope the test will become as routine as a pap smear, providing actionable information to guide the timing of a pregnancy or the decision to freeze one’s eggs. Through online fertility seminars, user forums, quizzes, and doctor-discussion guides, the company aims to become more than a test provider, but a hub for open communication about an often uncomfortable topic.
