Macro

The World's Most Innovative Companies 2018

Former WME partner Charles D. King’s media startup develops TV, film, and digital projects focused on the stories and experiences of people of color as a means of broadening Hollywood’s narrow storytelling perspective. The company, which has a slate of four to six movies and TV shows a year, was behind the adaptation of the August Wilson play Fences, which won a Best Actress Oscar for Viola Davis; as well as Dee Rees’s adaptation of the historical novel Mudbound, another Oscar contender. In 2017, Macro raised an additional $150 million in financing from investors including Laurene Powell Jobs’s Emerson Collective, following an initial eight-figure round of investment when Macro first launched in 2015. In addition to film and TV projects, Macro is also developing documentary and digital series with Time Inc. and Essence magazine about the unsung female heroes of the civil rights movement.
