The MacArthur Foundation, backed by the wealth of insurance magnate John MacArthur, who died in 1978, focuses on building a “more just, verdant, and peaceful world.” It currently operates a $6.2 billion endowment and commits $250 million in grants annually to initiatives to battle climate change, reform the criminal justice system, lower nuclear risk, and reduce government corruption in Nigeria. It is also makes impact investments in social enterprises, provides “genius grants” to creative individuals, and has worked to preserve affordable housing in the U.S. In mid-2016 the group launched the 100&Change competition, a contest to award $100 million to whatever group could both define one of the world’s most vexing problems and come up with a way to fix it. Sesame Workshop and the International Rescue Committee won the prize with a proposal to provide programming that addresses the educational gaps and toxic stress of 9.4 million refugee children uprooted from conflict zones in Jordan, Lebanon, Iraq, and Syria.
