Lake | Flato is a San Antonio, Texas--based architecture and design firm founded in 1984 and known for its focus on indoor-outdoor structures. Lake | Flato specializes in sustainably sourced designs, as well as curbing the environmental impact of its works, as in the Dixon Water Foundation Josey Pavilion--a meeting and educational space in Decatur, Texas. The pavilion is the first structure in the Gulf Coast region to meet the Living Building Challenge, which requires that a building exhibit a near-zero impact on its environment. The Josey Pavilion is water independent, features net-zero carbon production, and is constructed out of recycled materials. It's a feat of not only powerful but thoughtful engineering in a world of limited resources that is increasingly being put under strain by development.
