Kepler Communications

Last year, a cargo train made the 7,500 mile journey from Yiwu, China, to London, U.K. While it would be convenient to imagine that a nifty tracking device attached to each car allowed a modern satellite to follow the journey, the reality is that the train goes through several countries with different telecom infrastructures--some are still on 2G, others have 3G, many of the networks are totally unreliable. Kepler is solving this problem by launching a small-scale satellite network that repurposes existing ground equipment for super-lightweight but worldwide coverage. The latency is huge--anywhere from 90 minutes to 12 hours will go by before anyone gets a tracking signal--but the system is far less expensive than what rivals are offering.
