ICON is a construction technology company developing 3D-printing capabilities for homebuilding. Its goal is to use this tech to alleviate homelessness and the lack of affordable housing. In 2018, it built the first permitted, 3D-printed home in the United States in conjunction with the not-for-profit organization New Story. The house, constructed in Austin, Texas, cost $10,000 to build and it took less than 48 hours. Icon's Vulcan I mobile 3D printer works on site to produce its materials out of concrete, with little to no waste produced in the process. The Vulcan is designed to work in challenging environments where access to water and reliable power is not guaranteed. It plans to build a community of more than 100 homes in El Salvador this year, and its work has garnered interest in areas ranging from Louisiana to China.
