The Home Depot is a home improvement big box chain founded in Atlanta, Georgia in 1978 and now headquartered in neighboring Atlanta. Founders Bernard Marcus, Arthur Blank, Ron Brill, and Pat Farrah initially designed the stores as a one-stop shop for building and landscaping supplies. Since 2013, the company has not opened a large format store in the U.S., opting instead to improve its web presence and e-commerce offerings and to invest heavily in delivery and in-store pickup infrastructure. Meanwhile, Home Depot employees have been trained to use proprietary handheld devices that aid them in searching a growing selection of product offerings that customers are searching for in-store or ordering for delivery. This investment in e-commerce helped make 2016 the most profitable year in the company’s history.
