The Greyston Bakery has a unique hiring policy for the workers that make its famous brownies: Put your name on a list, and when a job opens up, the first person on the list is hired, without any interview or job application process. This means that groups who often have trouble finding employment--veterans, the formerly incarcerated, refugees, homeless, and disabled individuals--can all get a job at the bakery. The company calls it The Open Hiring Model, and the bakery is so successful it's now trying to spread the plan. It's opening The Center for Open Hiring to focus on the practice and promotion of Open Hiring while evaluating, improving, and defining best practices. It plans to train more than 80 companies to implement Open Hiring practices by 2020.
