GrantAdvisor is a nonprofit initiative that allows nonprofits to anonymously review their experiences in securing and executing grants with foundations through a website that mimics Yelp or Trip Advisor. The goal is to change the power dynamics within the sector. Currently, nonprofits often don’t give honest feedback to funders because funders control their purse strings. The site, which launched in 2017, is backed by a panel of philanthropy experts including representatives from the California Association of Nonprofits, Minnesota Council of Nonprofits, and GreatNonprofits, a nonprofit review service developer. Functionally, it revolved around two user-submitted metrics: The average time it takes to complete a grant application, and an averaged emoji-based score (ranging from smiley to frown-y) as an approximation for things like the funder’s overall openness, accessibility, and ability to accomplish stated goals. That way nonprofits can recognize which grants are worth applying for while funders learn how they might improve.
