Ginkgo Bioworks

Since its founding in 2008 by a group of MIT grad students and their advisor, Tom Knight, a pioneer in computer science and synthetic biology, Ginkgo has helped to radically transform the design and production of custom microorganisms used across a range of industries. In 2017, the company secured a $275 million Series D round from investors including Bill Gates's Cascade Investment fund, bringing its total valuation to over $1 billion, and it opened a third biological “foundry” at its Boston Seaport headquarters, a highly automated factory for prototyping and scaling production of yeast and other microbes engineered with synthetic DNA to produce flavors, fragrances, and industrial enzymes. It also announced a partnership with Bayer, to develop agricultural applications, and purchased synthetic DNA maker Gen9 to further increase its production capacity. The company currently has more than 40 organisms under contract for customers in health and beauty, food, textiles, agriculture, energy, and pharmaceuticals.
