Car-sharing company Getaround has been on the scene since 2011. The company lets car owners rent out their vehicles when they're not using them, which could reduce emissions and gridlock in cities while letting car owners make some extra cash. The company's patented Connect hardware makes the process safe and convenient by letting renters find and unlock a car remotely and allowing owners to keep tabs on their car while it's in use. In 2015, Getaround expanded to 10 additional cities, including Washington, D.C., where it has 30,000 sign-ups, and Chicago, where it received a federally funded $715,000 grant to study the impact of car-sharing in the Windy City. The company doubled its revenue from March to September of 2015, and this year Getaround plans to invade New York City, where it says it already has more than 10,000 members.
