Gerber Architekten is a German design firm specializing in architecture, interior design, urban design, and landscape design. Founded in 1966, Gerber has offices in three German cities, as well as China and Saudi Arabia. The firm is known for its work revitalizing public spaces, completing a redesign of the iconic King Fahd National Library in Saudi Arabia's capital Riyadh in 2015. The striking (and sustainable) library features large steel cables tied together by white awnings that will simultaneously reflect and absorb the heat of Riyadh's desert while offering library patrons a cool place to research, relax, and read. Inside, exhibition spaces, a bookshop, a restaurant, and live plants have been erected around linear elements to create a space that is both peaceful and awe-inspiring. Since its completion, the environmentally friendly library has been a hit, garnering Gerber Architekten 10 awards, including the 2015 Global Architectural Award.
