Fluence is a battery company deploying large-scale energy storage solutions for utilities around the world, to make the grid more reliable for renewables. Its batteries usually replace “peaker” natural gas engines that are typically only deployed 5-6% of the year to help meet energy needs at peak times. During Hurricanes Irma and Maria, a Fluence system helped keep the Dominican grid operating during the storms, even after almost half the island’s power plants were forced offline. The 200MW of battery storage it currently has deployed and contracted is enough capacity to power nearly 500,000 U.S. homes.
